TheWeekInCongress.com (TM) Week Ending October 12, 2007
H.R.2553 To amend the State Department Basic Authorities Act of 1956 to provide for the establishment and maintenance of existing libraries and resource centers at United States diplomatic and consular missions to provide information about American culture, society, and history, and for other purposes.
The Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy is directed to implement efforts ensuring that diplomatic and consular mission libraries are open to scheduled public showings of American films that illustrate American culture, society, values and history. The films to be shown are part of the Johnny Grant Film Series.
The Series would include mostly ‘G’ rated films along the line of “White Christmas”. Grant, himself, is a Hollywood icon who has acted, but mainly represented Hollywood and the film industry to GIs over seas and as a activist for US causes and issues in the US. He oversaw the Hollywood Walk of Fame where he, too, was awarded a star.
Access to the film showing would be tempered by security needs.
