H.CON.RES.161 Authorizing the use of the Capitol Grounds for an event to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Million Man March.

BRIEF

Ten years ago on October 15 the Million Man March event took place in Washington, D.C. This resolution would authorize the use of the Capitol grounds for the free public event commemorating the original march.

The Million Man March aimed to show solidarity and unity among the nation’s African-Americans and to take exception to policies enacted by the new Republican majority in Congress that the marchers believed negatively impacted them and their race. It was spearheaded by Louis Farrakhan, a former calypso singer who rose to prominence in the Nation of Islam, a African-American dominated ‘branch’ of Islam that has, in the past, made threatening remarks about the white race and white leaders. Nevertheless, the march reportedly pulled over a million marchers and went about registering participant to vote in US elections.
