H.R.2884 To assist members of the Armed Forces in obtaining United States citizenship, and for other purposes.

The Secretary of Homeland Security is directed to use fingerprints from an individual at the time of military enlistment to satisfy naturalization and fingerprint requirements if the fingerprinting was done by the Department of Defense and the individual submits a naturalization application within 24 months of enlistment.

Alien military personnel may inquire about the process through a toll-free assistance phone number, ordered in this bill, for use only by military personnel and their families. The phones will be operated by DHS employees trained in the naturalization process for military and their families. The calls will be monitored for quality control and accuracy. Other procedures, booklets and forms are to be updated and Internet Website must reflect changes to naturalization laws.

A report is due Congress on the application process and a study of the implementation of this act is required from DHS.

Sponsor:  Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-MS-7th)

Vote: Passed House by voice vote November 5, 2007

Cost to the taxpayers: No discernible cost.
