2. The second new law for 2005 revises how Class Action lawsuits are handled.

S5/Public Law 109-2 To amend the procedures that apply to consideration of interstate class actions to assure fairer outcomes for class members and defendants, to outlaw certain practices that provide inadequate settlements for class members, to assure that attorneys do not receive a disproportionate amount of settlements at the expense of class members, to assure prompt consideration of interstate class actions, to amend title 28, United States Code, to allow the application of the principles of Federal diversity jurisdiction to interstate class actions, and for other purposes. 3. The third new law for 2005 overrides a State court decision.

S686 / Public Law 109-3 to provide for the relief of the parents of Theresa Schiavo (allowing them to take to a Federal court the matter of removing her feeding tube. A Florida court ordered the tube removed, the parents didn't accept that decision and wanted the federal court to hear the case. Congress complied with the parents wish.
