Presidential Notice - Continuation of the national emergency with respect to Burma.

<< Click flag for map and country data, Burma.

A 1997 presidential Executive Order certified to Congress that the government of Burma has committed large-scale- repression of the democratic opposition in Burma after September 30, 1996. The repressions invoked the prohibition on new investment in Burma by US persons. A national emergency was also declared then under the International Economic Powers Act.

The President in 2003 issued an EO putting in place an import ban required by law and prohibited exports of financial services to Burma. This notice continues Burma’s status as a threat to national security and foreign policy beyond May 20, 2007 for one year.
