H.R.5401 To amend section 308 of the Lewis and Clark Expedition Bicentennial Commemorative Coin Act to make certain clarifying and technical amendments.

This commemorative coin act was approved last year to produce coins relating to the upcoming bicentennial of the explorations and discoveries of the early US explorers Lewis and Clark.

Commemorative coins must pay their own way from surcharges. After the cost of designing, minting and distributing the coins is recovered from sales, the remainder goes to organizations supporting the cause of the coins.

In this bill the amount of money to those organizations is revised. Half of the remaining funds will go to the National Council of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial and the other half would go to the Missouri Historical Society. Any of those funds not spent by June 30, 2007 will be transferred to the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation to establish a trust fund for the stewardship of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.

Sponsor: Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (R-MO-8th)

Vote: Passed House by voice vote May 23, 2006

Cost to the taxpayers: No cost to the taxpayers. Commemorative coins must pay for themselves.
