Week Ending March 30, 2006

H.R.1468 To ensure that, for each small business participating in the 8(a) business development program that was affected by Hurricane Katrina of 2005, the period in which it can participate is extended by 18 months.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina Congress created a business development plan for businesses affected by the hurricane. This bill extends the program for 18 months.

The extension covers businesses in all the Louisiana Parishes impacted by Katrina.

Participating small businesses received business and technical support from organizations particularly to apply for federal contracts. Businesses usually participate for nine years. SBA estimates that 145 small businesses would accept the extension.

Sponsor:  Rep. William J. Jefferson (D-LA-2nd)

Vote: Passed House by voice vote March 26, 2007.

Cost to the taxpayers: CBO estimates that extending the period of eligibility for such programs would cost less than $1 million.
