Presidential Notice continuing the national emergency with respect to Iran

<< Click flag for map and country data, Iran

This notice looks back to 1995 and an executive order (12957) that declared the actions and policies of the Government of Iran an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy and economy of the US. Shortly after, another EO was issued (12959) that imposed comprehensive sanctions on Iran and in 1997 in EO 13059 the sanctions were consolidated and clarified.

In this notice the President continues to see Iran as a threat to security, policy and economy of the US and continues the sanctions, past and present, for one year.

Seeing Iran as a threat apparently goes back to 1979 in another EO.
