H.R.1830 To extend the authorities of the Andean Trade Preference Act until September 30, 2009.

Provisions of the Andean Trade Act that would expire this year are extended through FY 2008. Other provisions are repealed.

As is the nature of trade agreements certain trade products are given preferential treatment meaning they may benefit from lower tariffs or other adjustments that stimulate trade for those products. Under this bill preferential treatment is extended to some products that are assembled in one of the trade partner countries from fabrics or components from elsewhere in the region. Products would include brassieres that are cut and sewn or otherwise assembled in the US.

The South American countries in the compact are Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru.

Sponsor:  Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY-15th)

Vote: Agreed to 365 to 59 RC 583 June 27, 2007

Cost to the taxpayers: No discernible cost
