S.47 A bill to provide for the exchange of certain Federal land in the Santa Fe National Forest and certain non-Federal land in the Pecos National Historical Park in the State of New Mexico.

BRIEF

The bill provides for a land swap of 154 acres of non-Federal land in Peco National Historical Park in New Mexico to the Dept of Interior in exchange for 160 acres of Federal land within the Sante Fe National Forest also in New Mexico. The private landowner gets an easement for water pipelines to two well sites located in the Peco Park.

The swap is considered of equal value and would put under National Park Service authority and management land associated with the 1862 Civil War battle of Glorieta Pass. The land is currently privately owned and difficult to manage for public access and preservation.

Sponsor: Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM)
