S 302 A bill to make improvements in the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health.

BRIEF

The FNIH (Foundation for the National Institute of Health) is a non-profit foundation authorized in 1990 to raise funds for NIH (National Institute of Health), from the private sector, for the purpose of supporting the work of the NIH.

Since its creation the FNIH has raised $276.5 million and the funds are supporting 38 programs, the Committee Report explained. One big supporter is Microsoft founder Bill Gates whose foundation has donated $200 million for global health initiatives.

The bill would authorize the transfer to FNIH no less than $500,000 and no more than $1.25 million yearly from funds already appropriated to the NIH.

Sponsor: Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA)

Vote: Passed Senate by Unanimous Consent. (July 27, 2005)

Cost to the taxpayers: No additional spending because funds are already appropriated.
