S.4046 A bill to extend oversight and accountability related to United States reconstruction funds and efforts in Iraq by extending the termination date of the Office of the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction.
In lieu of recent reports that billions of taxpayer dollars have gone missing from the effort to rebuild Iraq infrastructure and other such projects, the bill aims at keeping better tabs on that money by extending the term of the Office of Inspector General for the mission.
Under this bill the OIG will continue until ten months after 80% of funds appropriated or otherwise made available to the Iraq Relief and Reconstruction Fund (IRRF) has been spent. Funds appropriated in FY 2006 are included in the calculations.
Upon completion of the assignment the OIG will produce a final forensic audit on all funds appropriated or otherwise made available to the IRRF.
Sponsor: Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) Vote: Passed Senate by Unanimous Consent December 6, 2006. Passed House by voice vote December 8, 2006. Cost to the taxpayers: No discernible cost.
