S.1346 A bill to direct the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a study of maritime sites in the State of Michigan.

The maritime history of Michigan is the subject of this bill that calls for a resource study and report to determine the suitability and feasibility of long-term protection of maritime heritage resources and demonstrate how the public can best learn about and experience that history.

A great Lake state, Michigan is reported to have more shoreline than any state in the Continental US and has hosted fur traders, sailing ship captains, and freighter pilots have traveled the shoreline for 500 years resulting in cities and towns being built.

Among the resources to be studied are 120 lighthouses, historic hotels, Coast Guard stations and other structures the bill report noted.

The study will also look for financial and technical assistance and to identify opportunities for the National Park Service and the State of Michigan to coordinate activities between State and local parks and historic sites. Three years after the study the Secretary of Interior will report to Congress on the study results.
