S.2167 A bill to amend the USA PATRIOT ACT to extend the sunset of certain provisions of that Act and the lone wolf provision of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 to July 1, 2006.
BRIEF
Unable to reach a consensus on extending for four years or making permanent provisions in the PATRIOT Act (HR 3199) the Senate passed this bill to temporarily extend the provisions for 6 months.
The Act gives law enforcement extra powers of surveillance and information exchange between agencies and a broader range of freedom to access the information of individuals, businesses and organizations within and without the US.
The Act was due to expire on December 31, 2005. Congress is expected to take up the longer extension when it returns to business after the seasonal holidays.
Sponsor: Senator John Sununu (R-NH)
