Presidential Determination 2006-5 Suspension of limitations under the Jerusalem Embassy Act.
It is US policy that the capital of Israel is Jerusalem, that the city and religious places should be open to all faiths and that the US will build an Embassy in Jerusalem.
However, the actual moving of the Embassy to Jerusalem as well as the policy behind it, although in place since around 1995, has been stalled every six months as Presidents Clinton and Bush opted to forestall moving the embassy to Jerusalem because it is “necessary to protect the national security interests of the United States.”
Mostly, such a move has been predicted to raise objection from Palestinian interests in the area who do not believe that Jerusalem is or should be the capital of Israel or, for that matter, that Israel is a legitimate entity in the region.
