H.R.6633 To evaluate and extend the basic pilot program for employment eligibility confirmation and to ensure the protection of Social Security beneficiaries.
A pilot program through which employers can verify Social Security numbers to determine if an applicant is an illegal alien is extended under this bill.
The Department of Homeland Security will enter into an agreement with the Commissioner of Social Security with which to acquire, install, and maintain technological equipment and systems necessary to operate the verification system.
It was reported that the current system produced erroneous confirmations. The GAO is directed to conduct a study and report the causes of the nonconfirmations, how those nonconfirmations are remedied and the effect of a nonconfirmation on individuals, employers and Federal Agencies. In two years the GAO is to report on the impact of the system on small entities. The report must emphasize the costs of compliance with the program, a description and an estimate of the number of entities enrolled, the projected reporting, recordkeeping and other compliance required, factors impacting small entity’s roll and participation in the program and any steps DHS has taken to minimize the economic impact of participation.
