'UNIFORM FOOD' BILL MOVES IN HOUSE
States' Ability to Enforce Food Safety and Product Labeling Requirements Would be Suspended
States Would Face Two Year Appeal Process
The bill would require that state- or local-mandated restrictions on food ingredients, additives, labeling or other such notifications or warnings must be the same as those approved by the federal government. Current state requirements that prohibit certain additives or warn of possible dangers from high tolerances, often more stringent than federal requirements, would be suspended. The bill governs notifications on labels, through labeling, poster, public notice, advertising, or any other means of communication and prohibits, in particular, requirements a State might apply to adulterated foods, unsafe food additives and new animal drugs. Only Unemployment Benefits Remain
The original bill looked at numerous loose ends in dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina including removal of limitations on how much money and for what disaster relief purposes the Federal government may distribute to home and property owners victimized by Hurricane Katrina, but the House could only find support for extending unemployment benefits. |
