SENATE BILL TAKES ON LOBBY REFORM AND OTHER ISSUES

Spending 'Earmarks' Defined

Some Bill Contents To Be Better Publicized

The bill takes aim at three current matters of concern to the general public: lobby reform, control over ‘earmark’ spending in bills and revealing to the public modifications on bills that generally are not available to the public until the bill passes. A last minute amendment offered by Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) regarding prohibiting the recent purchase of a United Arab Emirate owned entity that would take over and manage as many as 20 US ports and a notification from DP WORLD, Inc., the UAE entity, that it would turn over complete involvement in managing US ports to a US entity came as the Senate failed to invoke cloture to bring the bill to final debate and a vote. 'UNIFORM FOOD' SAFETY BILL PASSES HOUSE

No Restrictions on Mercury Warning in Fish and Shellfish

The bill would require that state- or local-mandated restrictions on food ingredients, additives, labeling or other such notifications or warnings must be the same as those approved by the federal government. Current state requirements that prohibit certain additives or warn of possible dangers from high tolerances, often more stringent than federal requirements, would be suspended. The bill governs notifications on labels, through labeling, poster, public notice, advertising, or any other means of communication and prohibits, in particular, requirements a State might apply to adulterated foods, unsafe food additives and new animal drugs.  More about HR 4167
