House Concurrent Resolution 409

BRIEF

  The resolution recognizes “with humble gratitude the more than 16,000,000 veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces during World War II and the Americans who supported the war effort on the home front and celebrating the completion of the National World War II Memorial on the National Mall in the District of Columbia.”

   The idea for the memorial began in 1993 with WWII vet Roger Durbin of Ohio. Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, also of Ohio, introduced the legislation that allowed the memorial to be established in the District of Columbia. Congress authorized the American Battle Monuments Commission, an independent Federal agency, to design and construct the memorial. The American Battle Monuments Commission selected Friedrich St. Florian as the design architect for the memorial, and his final architectural design was approved by the Commission of Fine Arts, the National Capital Planning Commission, and the Secretary of the Interior;

  Construction began on the memorial in September 2001. It was dedicated on Memorial Day 2004, 60 years after the end of WWII.
